Scottsdale, AZ (February 4, 2025) - The National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET) announced today that five schools have received $10,000 as finalists for NIET’s 2025 Founder’s Award. The prestigious Founder’s Award, created by Lowell Milken in 2008, honors one school in the United States each year for outstanding implementation of NIET’s principles to foster educator excellence and advance student success. The five finalist schools will be honored at NIET’s national conference in Washington, D.C., on February 27, where the grand prize winner will be revealed and receive a cash prize of $50,000.

The finalists are Eastside Elementary School (Warren County Schools, Tennessee); Provencal Elementary/Junior High School (Natchitoches Parish School Board, Louisiana); Shenandoah Elementary School (Shenandoah School Corporation, Indiana); Somerset High School (Somerset Independent School District, Texas); and Waterloo Elementary School (Laurens County School District 55, South Carolina).

Founder’s Award recipients are selected by NIET based on several factors, including improving classroom instruction and student academic growth; creating high-quality professional learning and coaching systems focused on the real-time needs of teachers and students; and engaging teacher leaders and school leaders in building a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.

NIET’s partner schools, including the 2025 finalists, have demonstrated continuous improvement in teaching, learning, and student outcomes by utilizing NIET’s tools and resources to create supportive instructional environments and career pathways for educators.

“These five schools exemplify the profound impact of equipping teachers and leaders with the tools they need to succeed,” said NIET Chief Executive Officer Dr. Joshua Barnett. “Their progress underscores the importance of empowering educators with the right resources and support to drive improvement  – giving every student the opportunity to excel.”
