NIET Presents Perry Township Schools with Surprise $50,000 National Award of Excellence for Educator Effectiveness

To thunderous cheers, Lowell Milken presented Perry Township Schools in Indiana with NIET's new National Award of Excellence for Educator Effectiveness. The award comes with a -- surprise! -- cash prize of $50,000. Perry Township Schools has made notable student achievement gains by focusing on attracting, developing and retaining talented teachers. Creating structures and supports for teachers to lead has been all the more important as the district has had to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population. Perry is home to the highest percentage of English Learners in the state -- largely due to an influx of refugees, mainly from Burma. Seventy-one percent of students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. Read the full story.
